Home Economics educators compete

A competition has been running between the Home Economics educators in primary and secondary schools around Cyprus, who have been using the lesson plans created by the Cyprus Food and Nutrition Museum, in the framework of Europeana Food and Drink program.

In order to participate, the educators had to follow three basic steps: 1. Choose between the three lesson plans proposed by the Museum, 2. apply the lesson plans in their classrooms and adjust them in each group's level, requirements and interests, and 3. submit the competition form recording the results of these teaching sessions as well as photographs, students' projects, presentations and basically anything that would reveal the actions that took place within the classroom.

The Museum has received some remarkable participations all revealing that nutrition education is not only important and necessary but could also be interactive, creative and fun. Some of the activities that took place during the lessons were role playing, script-writing, group games, food tasting, cooking, poster creation, excursions, group projects, presentations, interviews and polls. The students in all cases seemed very engaged and excited, interested on the traditional aspects of nutrition, and also skeptical about their food choices and consuming habits.

All the participations were exemplary and the evaluation committee had to undertake a difficult task in order to decide on the results.

The three educators and schools that won are:

1st prize: Maria Eliadou, Archangelos high school (Nicosia)

2nd prize: Drosoula Lavithe, Engomi high school (Nicosia)

3rd prize: Margarita Antoniou, Voroklini primary school (Larnaka)

The award ceremony will take place by the end of June in the premises of the Ministry of Education and Culture, that has been supporting this competition all along. The date and program of the event will be announced the following days.
