Street Food photography exhibition

The Cyprus Food and Nutrition Museum, in collaboration with the Photography and Cinematography Club of Egkomi, are pleased to announce the opening of a photography exhibition entitled “Street Food: Depicting the Cypriot Food Culture”. The exhibition will be held at the Goethe Institut in Nicosia, from March 23rd to 26th 2016.

Marking the end of a 6-month project on “Street Food: From the Past to the Present”, the exhibition will feature a wide range of photos depicting Cypriot street food as a specific dietary category, which includes all the more or less processed foods and drinks that are sold by itinerant vendors in the street or in other public spaces, and are intended to be readily consumed at the spot. The presented photographs will showcase itinerant vendors, special equipment, preparation techniques, the sale of food and drink, serving methods, consumption and other aspects of the topic, in public space settings.

The exhibition aspires to present the audience with a panorama of the Cypriot food culture, related to eating and drinking outdoors. An important number of photographs was assembled from various archival collections, and documents the historical dimension of street food as an evolving cultural phenomenon on the island from the beginning of the British rule (1878) and throughout the 20th century. A second group of photographs resulted from a photo contest held in the framework of the project, and highlights contemporary aspects of street food in Cyprus.

As a famous chef once said, “You don't need a silver fork to eat good food.” This exhibition will bring back memories of the enjoyable tastes and smells of the street, so familiar to everyone in Cyprus, and it will also introduce a cultural dimension to some beloved habits of our everyday lives.
