PINIADA/TSOUKKA
The piniada or tsoukka is a clay pot with a circular slightly convex base, high inwards inclining walls and two opposing, cylindrical handles just beneath the rim. This special type of lidded pot was produced at Kornos in at least four sizes and was known there as piniada. A very similar pot that had slightly more vertical walls was included in the repertoire of other red clay workshops of the Troodos massif (Foini, Kaminaria, Agios Dimitrios) and was known as tsoukka. Beyond cooking on the niskia (open hearth), the tsoukka was also useful as a pot to store and sell yogurt.
The tsoukka of the Bee and Embroidery Museum was made at Kornos in the 20th century. As other vessels of this types from Kornos, this one has a glazed interior. The use of the glazing technique, which was brought to the island sometime early in the 20th century, initially flourished, but was later banned by the British.
