ARMAROLLA

The armarolla was a type of storage cupboard found in the kitchen. Smaller cupboards, known as armarolloues were utilised for the storage of food, like cheese, bread, cold cuts, etc. These consisted of a wooden frame with the sides covered by a thin silk or other thin fabric mesh, and were hanged from the roof with a cord for the protection and ventilation of the stored food. In more recent times, the term armarolles was used to describe larger wooden standing cupboards. The latter usually had an upper and lower part. Usually, the upper part consisted of a double-door with glass at the front side and further contained shelves for the placement of plates and other utensils, as well as for temporarily storing food, while the lower part consisted of drawers and smaller storage spaces.
